BlackBerry Bold 9700 vs. BlackBerry Bold 9780

The BlackBerry Bold 9700, a.k.a. the Bold 2 had been the only high-end choice available if you wanted to upgrade your BlackBerry. But for a while now, the Bold 9780, a.k.a. the Bold 3, has been available and everyone’s starting to wonder which one of the two is better. The Bold 2 costs around Rs. 21,500, and the Bold 3 costs around Rs. 24,500. Is it worth it? Let’s see…

Here’s what the Bold 3/9780 has over the Bold 2/9700:

  1. 512mb of RAM (the Bold 2 has 256mb)
  2. 5.0 megapixel camera (the Bold 2 has a 3.2 megapixel camera)
  3. BlackBerry 6 OS (Bold 2 comes with 5)

So is the Bold 3 worth the 3 or 3.5k extra? No. Here’s why:

  1. 256mb of RAM works just fine. If you upgrade to the latest OS (yes you can), you’ll notice that the BB feels smoother, faster and doesn’t fuck up by leaking memory too much.
  2. 5.0 megapixels is overkill. The 3.2 megapixel camera on the Bold 2 gets you excellent quality pictures and video – they’re just perfect for uploading to Facebook and Twitter. With a 5 megapixel camera, you’re just going to sit with bigger image files on your memory card.
  3. The Bold 2 can be upgraded to the latest version of BlackBerry 6 and you don’t need to spend any extra money for that.

If you already have a Bold 2 and you’re considering upgrading: the Bold 3 doesn’t offer you that “new phone” feel. It’s the same phone with a few extra chips inside.

So, either way, I say save the 3.5k and stick/go with the Bold 2/9700. Get the latest OS (6.0.0.461 at this point) and your phone will be much faster, more responsive and it’ll get you some extra features!

  1. *Well, i was using a Bold2 and had upgraded to the latest version on os6 in December, and trust me it was a pain. The fone was very slow, the applications used to take time to open up, and i used to end up restarting the fone atleast twice a day in order to maintain restrain.
*So finally, i shifted to the Bold3 last week, and it has been tremendously quick. Everything remains the same, but the on-board memory is what stands out, and eventually offers you the smooth experience.
*Camera, no doubt is a huge positive and the pictures are very clear.
*Bold3 keypad has the matt finish as compared to the gloss on the Bold2. Also the silver chrome sidelines have been changed to black.

I would definitely recommend everyone to spend that extra money, and opt for the Bold3. Its totally worth it.

    1. There have been several versions of 6.0 released/leaked for the Bold 9700. I first put 6.0.0.344, which had a lot of problems with context menu and copy/paste. However, I’ve never had the hanging problem and I wasn’t forced to restart the phone every day. A while later, I updated to 6.0.0.448 and that’s been working very, very well. Its faster, the memory management is better (no leaks) and all the menus and copy pasting works fine. You should try 6.0.0.461 now on someone’s Bold 2 – it’s worth saving the money!

      2. @ned, you can now install the official OS 6.0.0.615 (released by Bell Mobility) on your Bold 2 9700. Get the instructions and the OS from here: http://crackberry.com/bell-mobility-releases-official-os-600615-blackberry-bold-9700

    2. I had the same experience when i upgraded the OS on my bold 2: i almost hate my phone now. I can’t wait to replace it. The 3k extra may be a bit, but at least you keep your sanity in place.

  2. Well, that’s great then. But I’ve purchased the 9780 instead. Have used the 9700 for a long time, and screwed its interfave due to re-installations of OS versions. So yep, happier with the 9780. Vast difference, try it out dude. I’m sure you will get hooked on. 🙂 Laters.

  3. Aalaap, arent you contradicting yourself ? In your post comparing 8520 and 9300 you said the os6 is not worth the upgrade. Here you say quote — ” If you upgrade to the latest OS (yes you can), you’ll notice that the BB feels smoother, faster and doesn’t fuck up by leaking memory too much.”

So coming back to 8520vs9300 where i congratulated you, now Im confusd – is it worth spending a little extra for the os6 in 9300, instead of 8520
